My definition of design

Marie-Laure gives you the definition she has of design. She illustrates her words by evoking her travels.

« Design is for me the arrangement of furniture and ornamental objects in order to decorate a space, to make it pleasant to live. »

According to the Larousse, to decorate is "to provide a place with elements that embellish it, to place in a place accessories that will give it a festive air, to adorn an object with patterns, designs, colors, to adorn something, a place, to make it pleasing to the eye."

These definitions are totally in line with my definition of design. I mean, none of these descriptions, are opposed to what I believe characterizes decorating.

Let's take a closer look at these definitions.

To provide a place with elements that embellish it

What are the elements that can beautify a place? Let's not go into too much detail, but rather take it roughly.

Mainly we think about furniture, lights, curtains if we like. But we could add doors, windows, walls, floors... Many other things in fact. For me any element can embellish a place, from the most common to the most sophisticated, from the biggest to the smallest. As long as it is well chosen.

Place accessories in a place that will give it a festive air

I also find myself very much in this definition. I am sure that you have also thought about our Disanka formula (click here to access it), specially designed for events. It is true that when you give a party, you really need to give a festive touch to the decoration. Whether it's a baby-shower, a birthday party, a bar-mitzvah or a wedding etc ... the right accessories must be put together to give a new look to a place.

I am in tune with all of this, but here is what I would add.

Design is for me the arrangement of furniture and ornamental objects, in order to decorate a space, to make it pleasant to live.

It is an element of well-being

It's what makes me feel good about my home. I don't know about you, but when I walk into a beautiful space, it rests me.

For example, when I want to take a little getaway to rest for a weekend away from home, I look for a beautiful place. I know it will help make the weekend more enjoyable.

I'm sure and I've experienced it before, that when our eyes rest on beautiful things, the mind is soothed.

I love to discover new countries

Once on a trip to Reunion Island, I went with my family to the Cirque de Cilaos. I don't know how many meters of altitude we climbed. But once we arrived at the top, what a splendor under our eyes! The view of the landscape was just breathtaking. Breathtaking. And I felt in my body all the pressure escaping in the blink of an eye. All the pressures of life, of work, all of it gone just at the sight of this beautiful landscape.

Another example: in Croatia. We were out one morning on a family excursion. I was pregnant and really not feeling well like I do almost every morning. That day on the road, we passed a place on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The landscape was so beautiful, that we stopped on the spot to enjoy the view. We found ourselves in front of a panorama worthy of a postcard, but in real. The water of the sea was turquoise blue, the sand was almost white, and in the distance there was a mountainous island, and at the top of this mountain, snow! It was incredible! And very soothing. All my little morning ailments disappeared. For a natural remedy, it was. Those who have already had the opportunity to discover this beautiful country, certainly understand what I am saying.

I am not straying from my subject, but I wanted to illustrate with these examples, the fact that looking at beautiful things, helps us to feel better.

This is my definition of design. Now you understand why design is so important to me.
